Mathias Alten was born in 1871 in the Saar Region of Germany. In 1889 he moved with his family to Grand Rapids. He began a journey that would eventually lead him to be considered as the most important artist established in Grand Rapids. He is most known for his agrarian landscapes that occasionally include figures or animals, but he was also a leading portrait painter who painted prominent political and business figures and their families. He studied art in Europe and was recognized with many awards from Julian Academy and Colarossi Academy in Paris. Even though he is popular in Michigan, Mathias has also gained national recognition. Mathias continues to be recognized today with many local exhibitions and dedicated collectors.
