Frits Hoendervanger was born in the Netherlands in 1947. In 1960, he immigrated with his family to Canada, then to Michigan in 1964. Frits, being a self-taught artist, has received numerous awards for his paintings. He is represented in both public and private collections including the Michigan Governor’s mansion and the collection of former President Gerald R. Ford. In 1989, he received a major commission from Booth Newspapers to create a mural depicting the history of The Grand Rapids Press. The mural, one of his most complex and intricate works, measures eight by sixteen feet, and is installed in the Grand Rapids Press Building. Frits is best known for his paintings of a vanishing Michigan landscape.
