Michael Kifer is a well-known potter in the West Michigan area. He has also received recognition at Winter Park Art Festival in Florida and Best of show in Boston Mills Ohio Art Festival. All of his white earthenware designs are original, made with painted under glazes and slip decoration. The textures are finished with an acrylic stain and the hand-rubbed to showcase the rich patina. Kifer uses white earthenware as the base of his work, which becomes the “canvas” that provides the best background for the vivid, glaze colors. The glaze used is a commercial low-fire glaze, lead-free, and safe for food. Because white earthenware is softer and more porous than stoneware, using it in the microwave is not recommended.
